Elmira, NY, September 15, 2008 (2:30 p.m.) – Severe winds that have buffeted the area since early this morning have caused widespread damage to NYSEG’s electricity delivery system, leaving 7,160 of the company’s Elmira Division* customers without power at one time or another. While service has been restored to many of the affected customers, there are still 741 customers in the Elmira Division currently without power. NYSEG expects the majority of customers to have service restored by midnight tonight. Some customers in more isolated and heavily damaged areas will not have service restored until Tuesday evening. The hardest hit areas include the Towns of Baldwin, Campville, Chemung, Lindley, Orange, Prattsburg, Pulteney, Tyrone, Wayne and Wheeler.

“We really appreciate the support we have received in going about our work, and we thank our customers for their patience and understanding,” said Keith Lorenzetti, NYSEG’s director of regional operations.  

NYSEG urges customers to stay far away from downed power lines. Even lines that appear dead can be deadly. NYSEG customers should call 1.800.572.1131 to report downed power lines or other hazardous situations.
