NYSEG Awards $350,000 Grant to Owens-Illinois for Electric Infrastructure Improvements at Auburn Plant

Grant Is Part of NYSEG/RG&E’s $12 Million Annual Investment in Economic Development

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Rochester, NY – NYSEG recently awarded a $350,000 economic development grant to Owens-Illinois (O-I) for transformer and other electrical improvements at its glass container plant in Auburn.

This award is part of the approximately $12 million NYSEG and RG&E will invest annually in economic development in upstate New York during the next three years.

“The NYSEG and RG&E economic development programs are designed to encourage new capital investment and job creation by helping existing businesses grow, or to attract new business to upstate New York,” said Mark Lynch, president of NYSEG and RG&E.

“Receiving this grant from NYSEG will benefit O-I’s Auburn plant as we make electric infrastructure upgrades to improve the efficiency of the plant,” said Mark Smith, O-I’s Auburn plant manager. “Investments such as this help keep the Auburn plant competitive in the global marketplace for glass containers.”

“NYSEG is proud to help revitalize the upstate economy by assisting key companies like Owens-Illinois,” Lynch said. “We’ve seen a significant increase in grant applications during the last three months, which I believe is a solid indicator that the upstate New York economy is improving.”

Funding for this assistance was approved by the New York Public Service Commission as part of the new NYSEG/RG&E rate agreements that went into effect in September 2010. According to these agreements, NYSEG and RG&E are committed to award approximately $12 million in economic development grants annually for the next three years.
