NYSEG Looking to Boost Energy Efficiency in Qualifying Ithaca-area Apartments and Condominiums

Rochester, NY (March 31, 2011) – Upon request, NYSEG contractor RISE Engineering will conduct free lighting assessments of 5- to 50-unit apartment or condominium buildings in the Ithaca area during the coming weeks. RISE will then install energy-saving compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) in up to six fixtures in each dwelling. Rebates of up to 50% of the cost of replacing common-area lighting with energy-efficient lighting in qualifying multi-unit residences are also being offered.

Owners or managers of qualifying properties with NYSEG electricity service may request a lighting assessment by contacting RISE Engineering (1.800.444.5668) or NYSEG (1.800.995.9525). Apartment and condominium buildings with less than 5 units or more than 50 units per building are not eligible for this program, but may be eligible for other state-funded energy programs.

“Something as simple as switching to compact fluorescent bulbs that use 75% less energy and last up to 10 times as long as comparable incandescent bulbs can help cut energy bills and reduce greenhouse gases because less electricity will need to be generated to meet demand,” said Mark S. Lynch, president of NYSEG and RG&E.

Robert DeWeese, construction manager for Morgan Management, said that NYSEG’s program, “allowed us to take advantage of the CFL upgrades to get ahead of the incandescent phase out.  We have also noticed the savings in our energy bills. For a company our size, these small savings from each property snowball into huge savings very quickly.” Morgan Management owns apartment complexes in many states and recently purchased the Gun Hill Residences on Lake Street in Ithaca.
