NYSEG and RG&E Ranked as a U.S. Green Power Leader Wind Energy Program Recognized by Department of Energy
Rochester, NY (May 10, 2011) – NYSEG and RG&E together rank eighth in the nation in the number of participants in the companies’ wind energy program with 23,011, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s annual ranking of “green” power programs.
“We are extremely pleased to have earned this recognition of the success of our wind energy programs, and we continue to be encouraged by our customers’ enthusiastic support of this ‘green’ opportunity,” said Mark S. Lynch, president of NYSEG and RG&E. “Offering our customers the option to purchase wind-generated energy is a natural fit with our commitment to environmental stewardship.”
In 2010, NYSEG customers who participate in the program used nearly 53 million kilowatt-hours (kwh) of wind-generated electricity while RG&E participants used nearly 26 million kwh of wind-generated electricity.
Purchasing wind energy directly benefits the environment by reducing the need for fossil-fuel generation right here in New York. The estimated environmental benefits of the 2010 sales of wind energy at NYSEG and RG&E include the reduction of 63 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. That is the equivalent of removing more than 5,500 passenger vehicles from the road or the carbon sequestered by more than 6,100 acres of trees. Renewable energy sources also help avoid sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides emissions.
NYSEG began offering customers the opportunity to purchase wind energy in August 2002 while RG&E started its program in August 2004. Community Energy, a leading marketer and developer of renewable energy, supplies the wind energy and markets the program with NYSEG and RG&E.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, analyzes green power market trends. Each year, NREL ranks the top 10 utility green power programs by total sales of renewable energy to program participants, total number of customer participants, customer participation rate, green power sales as a percentage of total utility retail electricity sales, and the lowest price premium charged for a green power program using new renewable resources.
