NYSEG and RG&E Provided More Than $9 Million in Customer
Energy Assistance Last Heating Season 
More than 100,000 customers helped by local programs that add to federal assistance

Rochester, NY – More than 100,000 NYSEG and RG&E customers received nearly $9 million in assistance from the two utilities during the colder-than-average 2010-2011 heating season  in upstate New York.

The Energy Assistance Program (EAP) provided by NYSEG and RG&E helps eligible customers gain control of their energy bills. During the 2010-2011 heating season, NYSEG provided $6.3 million in assistance to 62,455 low-income customers while RG&E contributed $2.4 million to 39,267 customers in need.

This help was provided by NYSEG and RG&E to augment financial assistance provided by  the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) – a federal grant program that helps eligible households pay for energy costs, repairs and weatherization.

“NYSEG and RG&E proudly provided nearly $9 million in community assistance to our most vulnerable customers to help ensure safe and reliable service and boost the benefits they received from the federal government,” said Mark S. Lynch, president of NYSEG and RG&E.

NYSEG and RG&E Heating Fund Contributions Also Help
In addition to the formal assistance programs, NYSEG and RG&E also provided additional help through two other emergency assistance programs that are mainly funded through contributions from the utilities plus supplemental giving from their employees, retirees and customers:

• Project SHARE, administered by the Southern Tier Chapter of the American Red Cross, provides much-needed assistance to qualified customers to help pay for energy emergencies such as fuel bills, repairs to heating equipment, home weatherization and water heater replacements. Last year, NYSEG contributed $200,000 to Project SHARE.

• The Red Cross/RG&E Heating Fund, administered by the Greater Rochester Chapter of the American Red Cross, granted funds during the past heating season to qualified customers who were not eligible for other government assistance programs, such as HEAP. Last year, RG&E contributed $200,000 to the Red Cross/RG&E Heating Fund.

“These funds are for more than just heating help, and provide much-needed assistance all year. We encourage our customers to join us in contributing to them and help our less fortunate friends and neighbors gain control of their energy costs,” said Lynch.
