Iberdrola USA Foundation/NYSEG Contribution Puts ACA Memorial Fund Over Its Goal
– The Iberdrola USA Foundation, on behalf of NYSEG, has contributed $10,000 to support the construction of the ACA Memorial Park to honor the 13 people who lost their lives – as well as those who survived – the April 3, 2009 shooting at the American Civic Association in Binghamton. The contribution puts the memorial fund over its $200,000 goal.
“We are very pleased to support this project through the Iberdrola USA Foundation,” said Mark S. Lynch, president of NYSEG and RG&E. “We understand the impact this tragedy has had on the community and the importance of creating a memorial as part of the healing process.”
The memorial, expected to be under construction this summer, will feature a nine-sided, sheared-off granite column that is extended by a cast glass column that will be illuminated at night. It will also include 13 plaques with the names, nationalities and birthdates of each of the people killed, arranged in a circle around the column; 13 artisan-created figurative birds in flight, 14 feet above the pavement and illuminated; and benches and a garden.
The design is intended to include features that evoke a feeling of renewal combined with a deep respect of the loss that was suffered.
