Auburn Clark Street manufactured gas plant site

The Auburn Clark Street manufactured gas plant (MGP) site is located at the terminus of Clark Street in the City of Auburn, Cayuga County, New York.  The MGP began operations in 1901 and continued for approximately 45 years, ceasing in 1946.  Oil, coal and coke were used to produce carbureted water gas.  NYSEG acquired the site in 1936 and is the current site owner.  The above-grade plant structures were demolished by 1961.  An electrical substation and natural gas regulator building currently occupy the site.
