The Auburn McMaster Street manufactured gas plant (MGP) site is located at 23 McMaster Street in the City of Auburn, Cayuga County, New York. The MGP began operations in 1869 and provided coal gas to the local community by coal carbonization. The plant ceased operations in 1904 when gas manufacturing was shifted the the Clark Street MGP, which was located about a half mile to the west of the site. The above grade plant structures were demolished sometime before 1940. NYSEG is the current owner of the site. An electric transmission tower and a 3,000-square-foot single-story building currently occupy the site.
In the 18th century, gas for lighting, heating and cooking was produced by heating coal. These gas production facilities –manufactured gas plants (MGPs) – became obsolete as natural gas became more available. You can learn morehere.
