The Cortland-Charles Street remote gas holder location site is in the city of Cortland at 43 & 45 Charles Street. The site is bordered on the north by Grant Street, on the south by Clinton Avenue, on the east by North Church Street and on the west by Charles Street. The site was the location of a remote gas holder that stored coal gas manufactured at a plant in Homer, NY. Gas was never manufactured at this location. The remote gas holder operated at this location from about 1867 until about 1911. The single family residential homes at each property address were constructed between 1911 and 1915.
In the 18th century, gas for lighting, heating and cooking was produced by heating coal. These gas production facilities –manufactured gas plants (MGPs) – became obsolete as natural gas became more available. You can learn morehere.
