The Geneva Wadsworth Street manufactured gas plant (MGP) site is located on Wadsworth Street and Railroad Place in the City of Geneva, Ontario County, New York. The Wadsworth Street Former MGP was established in 1853, and operated continuously until 1903, producing gas by the coal carbonization method.
Between 1903 and 1909, the gas plant was demolished; the only remaining structures were the second gas holder, a tool house, and a meter house. The remaining gas holder was demolished between 1915 and 1925. Between 1925 and 1943, a new gas holder and a regulator house were constructed at the site to serve as a storage/distribution facility. This newer holder may have served as a remote distribution holder for the Border City MGP which was built as the Wadsworth MGP was decommissioned. The newer gas holder was demolished sometime after 1946.
Railroad Place was constructed through the center of the former MGP site, covering over the southernmost former gas holder foundation. Currently, the area of the former MGP north of Railroad Place is owned by NYSEG, while the former MGP area south of Railroad Place is owned by the City of Geneva. The former MGP area owned by NYSEG is a grass covered lot and asphalt parking lot. A NYSEG gas regulator shed sits near the intersection of Railroad Place and Wadsworth Street. The former MGP area owned by City of Geneva includes the Geneva Public Safety Building, which partially occupies the footprint of several former MGP structures.
