The Ithaca Court Street manufactured gas plant (MGP) site is in the city of Ithaca, east of North Plain Street, north of Court Street and south of Esty Street.
The MGP operated from 1852 until 1927, producing gas using the coal carbonization and carbureted water gas processes. In 1964, the Ithaca City School District purchased the property and it has since been used as an alternative high school and the district’s maintenance facility. In 2008, NYSEG purchased and renovated a nearby property where the district’s maintenance facility will be moved to clear the way for MGP site remediation activities.
In the 18th century, gas for lighting, heating and cooking was produced by heating coal. These gas production facilities –manufactured gas plants (MGPs) – became obsolete as natural gas became more available. You can learn morehere.
