Palmyra manufactured gas plant site

The Palmyra manufactured gas plant (MGP) site is located on Park Drive (formerly Railroad Avenue) in the Village of Palmyra, Wayne County, New York. The site is comprised of one parcel of land which is currently owned by NYSEG.  The parcel covers a total land area of about 0.89 acres.  The MGP operated for about 54 years (ca. 1857 to 1911) using coal to produce gas.  Gas was distributed to consumers through buried mains and used primarily for illumination.  Gas production at the site ceased when new gas and electric systems were introduced.  Currently, a natural gas regulator station is located in the western portion of the site.  Most of the rest of the site is used as an electrical transmission and distribution substation.
