Penn Yan Water Street manufactured gas plant site

The Penn Yan Water Street manufactured gas plant (MGP) site is located between Water Street and the Keuka Lake Outlet, in the Village of Penn Yan, Town of Milo, Yates County, New York. The site is comprised of two contiguous parcels of land which are currently owned by NYSEG.  The parcel covers a total land area of about 0.82 acres.  The MGP was constructed in 1899 and operated until 1930.  During this period, gas was manufactured through a coal gasification process using coal, coke and water.  Gas was distributed to consumers through buried mains and used primarily for illumination.   The former gas works building and gas relief holder foundation still remain at the site.  A natural gas regulator station is currently located in the northeast portion of the site.
