In accordance with the New York State Public Service Commission’s (PSC) approval of our natural gas expansion plans in Clinton County, we are required to charge all customers that connect to a natural gas line in our approved expansion areas a natural gas expansion surcharge. This surcharge is assessed to allow the expansion to meet the required financial return at the end of the expansion’s 10year development period.
Find below the applicable surcharge for your Clinton County area:
City of Plattsburgh, Towns of Peru and Saranac; Village of Champlain
The surcharge is 34.85 cents per therm.
A therm equals 100,000 Btus (British thermal units) and an average home using natural gas for space and water heating uses approximately 1,056 therms per year.
Based on this, the annual surcharge would be $368.
The surcharge will be assessed through the end of 2024.
To determine the approximate annual natural gas surcharge based on your current fuel consumption, please use the calculations provided below. The calculation assumes the natural gas equipment will have the same efficiency as your current energy source.
Fuel Oil ___gallons x 139,000 Btu/gallon ÷ 100,000 Btu/therm x $0.3485 per them = annual surcharge
Propane ___gallons x 91,600 Btu/gallon ÷ 100,000 Btu/therm x $0.3485 per them = annual surcharge
Electric ___kWh x 3,412 Btu/kWh ÷ 100,000 Btu/therm x $0.3485 per them = annual surcharge
