NYSEG and RG&E Catch the Wind Programs Continue to Garner Customer Support
Sales of Wind Energy in 2010 Were Enough to Power 7,300 Homes for a Year

Rochester, NYIn 2010, NYSEG and RG&E customers bought nearly 79 million kilowatt-hours (kwh) of clean, renewable electricity – enough to power more than 7,300 typical homes for a year – through the companies’ Catch the Wind program. Ninety percent of the renewable energy purchased by NYSEG and RG&E in 2010 was generated in New York.

At NYSEG, 2010 sales of Catch the Wind renewable energy were 52.9 million kwh and at RG&E 2010 sales were 25.9 million kwh. At the close of 2010, 16,426 NYSEG customers and 5,778 RG&E customers were enrolled in the program. 

“Our customers remain enthusiastic about wind energy,” said Mark S. Lynch, president of NYSEG and RG&E. “We are pleased to offer our customers the opportunity to purchase clean, renewable wind energy, particularly because it is a natural fit with our commitment to environmental stewardship. Although numbers are down slightly from last year, we are encouraged that customer participation is now increasing.” 

Purchasing wind energy directly benefits the environment by reducing the need for fossil-fuel generation right here in New York. The estimated environmental benefits of the 2010 sales of wind energy at NYSEG and RG&E include the reduction of 63 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. That is the equivalent of removing more than 5,500 passenger vehicles from the road or the carbon sequestered by more than 6,100 acres of trees. Renewable energy sources also help avoid sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides emissions.

The NYSEG and RG&E Catch the Wind program was the 10th most popular in the nation in 2009 in terms of total participants, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). National rankings for 2010 will be released by NREL later this year.

NYSEG’s wind energy program began in August 2002; RG&E’s program began in April 2004. The programs are offered in partnership with Community Energy Inc., a leading developer and marketer of renewable energy.
