NYSEG and RG&E Catch the Wind Programs Continue to Garner Customer Support
Sales of Wind Energy in 2011 Were Enough to Power Nearly 7,000 Homes for a Year
Rochester, NY – In 2011, customers of NYSEG and RG&E, subsidiaries of Iberdrola USA, bought nearly 74 million kilowatt-hours (kwh) of clean, renewable electricity – enough to power nearly 7,000 typical homes for a year – through the companies’ Catch the Wind program. All of the wind energy purchased by NYSEG and RG&E on behalf of their customers in 2011 was generated in New York.
At NYSEG, 2011 sales of Catch the Wind renewable energy were approximately 55 million kwh and at RG&E 2011 sales were approximately 19 million kwh. At the close of 2011, nearly 16,000 NYSEG customers and nearly 5,800 RG&E customers were enrolled in the program.

Purchasing wind energy directly benefits the environment by reducing the need for fossil-fuel generation right here in New York. The estimated environmental benefits of the 2011 sales of wind energy at NYSEG and RG&E include the reduction of approximately 51 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. That is the equivalent of removing approximately 4,500 passenger vehicles from the road or the carbon sequestered by approximately 4,900 acres of trees. Renewable energy sources also help avoid sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides emissions.
NYSEG’s wind energy program began in August 2002; RG&E’s program began in April 2004. The programs are offered in partnership with Community Energy Inc., a leading developer and marketer of renewable energy.
