If you are responding to an emergency, please call NYSEG immediately at 1.800.572.1121.  When you call, please give your name, location, and describe the conditions of the emergency as completely as possible.  Once you have contacted NYSEG, the following steps may be appropriate depending on the situation.  Please print out our reference How to Handle Natural Gas Emergencies (PDF) for more helpful information.

 

If natural gas is escaping and burning . . . .

Indoors

1. Call NYSEG
2. Shut off natural gas supply if possible
3. Protect nearby combustibles
4. Do not extinguish the flame until the natural gas supply can be shut off

 

Outdoors

1. Call NYSEG
2. Let natural gas burn
3. Clear the area
4. Protect nearby combustibles
5. Stay at a safe distance

 

If natural gas is escaping but not burning . . . .

Indoors

1. Call NYSEG
2. Evacuate the building
3. Shut off natural gas supply if possible
4. Eliminate ignition sources
5. Ventilate the building
6. Stay at a safe distance

 

Outdoors

1. Call NYSEG
2. Clear the area
3. Shut off natural gas supply if possible
4. Eliminate ignition sources
5. Use fog pattern on plastic
6. Stay at a safe distance
