Time-of-use service class (SC12)

Time‑of‑use (TOU) is a residential electric service class that charges different supply rates based on when you use electricity. It’s available for customers who use at least 35,000 kWh per year.

This option may be a good fit for customers in large homes or places, like churches or veterans’ homes, who can shift high energy use to off‑peak hours, such as EV charging, space heating, laundry and dishwashing.

How it works

Seasonal rate schedule

Electricity rates change based on the time of day and the time of year. Use this guide to plan your energy usage.

Summer (June-August) schedule
Peak Mid-peak Off-peak
WeekdaysMonday - Friday
WeekendsSaturday - Sunday

Shifting energy-intensive activities like laundry and EV charging to Off-Peak hours can reduce your electricity bill.

Time-of-use service rates and details

Your bill is composed of delivery and supply rates, plus taxes and surcharges.

Delivery rates are fixed and only change with Public Service Commission (PSC) approval. By contrast, supply prices in New York change often because they’re set by an open market and can be affected by a variety of factors, such as demand.

This means supply prices are typically higher during the daytime, and in winter and summer, when energy use is higher.

If we purchase supply on your behalf, we pass the cost on to you with no markup.

Historical supply rates (per kWh)

Here you’ll find our TOU historical supply rates compared to our Standard ones. If you’re being supplied by an ESCO, please check directly with them.

Usually, peak prices are higher than the Standard prices, while mid- and off-peak are lower.

However, we work to keep Standard supply prices more stable during times when people use more energy, such as very cold or hot months. Because of this, during those periods, mid‑ or off‑peak supply rates can be higher than the Standard rate.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, if you consume at least 35,000 kWh per year. Give us a call at 800.572.1111 and we can work on that.

If you consume more than 1,000 kWh per month, our Day-night service class could also be a good choice for you.

The best way to check your energy use is to access Energy Manager. If you have a smart meter, you can see your energy use down to the hour.

Another option is to review your latest bills. Log in to My Account and select “View usage data” on the menu.

While we can’t guarantee you’ll save on TOU, your final costs will depend on three things: how much electricity you use, when you use it and market supply price.

You’re more likely to control costs if you shift most of your energy use to mid- and off-peak. Think about heavy-use appliances, like heating and cooling equipment, EV chargers, laundry, dishwashers and other large equipment.

You may also save on this service class if you use energy during mild weather, since supply prices are usually lower during those periods and we don’t have peak hours during spring (March to May) and fall (September to November).

However, keep in mind that we don’t control supply price. It varies based on the market.

Check your usage down to the hour with Energy Manager and make an informed decision about your service class.

The Standard residential service class uses a single daily supply price to calculate your monthly bill. The Time-of-use (TOU) option charges you different prices based on when you use electricity: peak, mid- and off-peak hours.

For the Standard residential service class, we forecast energy demand to help smooth out price swings. As a result, during high‑usage months like January and July, customers usually see lower supply rates than they would if we didn’t take this approach—even though your bill may still be higher because you’re using more energy.

We don’t smooth prices for the TOU option. Instead, those rates follow real‑time market prices. This means TOU rates can change more often and vary more than Standard service prices.

Yes. However, it’s important to check if the chosen company offers a  time-of-use supply price class.

If you get your electricity supply from a third‑party provider (called an ESCO), check with them to see if they offer time-of-use rates. Any savings on your supply will depend on your contract with your ESCO, since we pass those costs through to you without markups.
