Lancaster: NYSEG Continues Restoration Effort, Announces Estimated Time of Restoration - 12 p.m.
Company continues to expand field resources to address remaining incidents
BINGHAMTON, NY — November 16, 2020, 12 p.m. — NYSEG’s restoration efforts continue to progress in the Lancaster Division and the company continues to add additional field resources to support restoration work. The company announced that they expect to restore 95% of customers impacted by the wind and thunderstorms that occurred yesterday and overnight by 11:00 p.m. tonight. Currently, approximately 9,188 customers impacted are without power in the company’s Lancaster Division which includes Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, and Erie counties. Some customers may experience short interruptions (and outage counts will fluctuate) as crews may need to de-energize portions of the system to safely restore others.
As the storm extended into the overnight period, it continued to impact service for customers, and caused damage to the electrical system. Throughout the division there were approximately 39 broken poles and 124 downed wires reported. As strong winds remained active overnight, crews were unable to use bucket trucks to perform restoration work on top of the utility poles. However, crews were able to perform other critical restoration work, such as replacing broken poles and pre-staging equipment in order to expedite restoration efforts today after the wind speeds slowed and the work could be safely performed.
Currently, there are approximately 467 field personnel in the Lancaster Division, and additional resources continue to arrive in the area to support restoration efforts.
Earlier today, the company outlined the day’s work objectives which included a full damage assessment, continuing to clear roads from downed wires, trees and other hazards, and performing restoration work.
The company continues to coordinate its response effort with state and local emergency management officials to clear roads of fallen trees and hazards and restore power service to critical facilities, such as hospitals and nursing homes.
Safety Tips
The company also reminds the public to stay away from downed wires and report any downed wires to NYSEG at 800.572.1131. Customers should not attempt to move wires or fallen trees until the area is deemed safe by professionals. It is possible that a live wire be tangled into a fallen tree, which could injure someone trying to remove the fallen debris.
Recognizing that many residents are currently home due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, for everyone’s safety, the company asks customers to observe a six-foot social distance if they must be near workers and always remain outside the work zone. Allowing crews to remain uninterrupted and focused on their work enables workers to determine damage and make repairs more quickly.
NYSEG will continue to provide updates throughout the event to the general public on the company’s social media channels (Facebook and Twitter). The company also offers customers the following reminders to prepare for the storm and stay safe if power outages do occur.
