BREWSTER, N.Y. — December 23, 2022, 10:00 p.m. — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) is responding after wind gusts associated with Winter Storm Elliott impacted the region today. Currently, approximately 6,327 customers in the company’s Brewster division and 2,447 in its Mechanicville division are without power. The Brewster division includes areas of Dutchess, Putnam, and Westchester counties. The Mechanicville division includes areas of Columbia, Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Washington counties. The Elmira division, which includes Steuben, Schuyler, and Chemung counties, currently has approximately 1,311 customers without power. NYSEG expects this may be a multiple day event, and will provide restoration times once the extent of the damage is more thoroughly assessed.

Crews are responding to outages and assessing damage. Damage reports from the storm includes downed trees and transmission lines, which has caused additional damage and delayed travel for crews. This storm will continue into Saturday, with a second surge of high winds in our service areas. In addition to utilizing the crews pre-staged in the region this week, we have moved personnel to highly impacted areas as needed. In total, we now have 1,800 line and tree service workers on the job across NYSEG on restoration efforts, with additional tree crews arriving Saturday morning.

The company is urging customers to limit travel unless necessary and avoid areas with downed trees. The company’s storm response team is fully engaged and crews will continue to work throughout the night and into tomorrow, until every customer is restored. The storm conditions prevent the use of some equipment, such as bucket trucks, which cannot operate when winds are in excess of 40 mph, so the company asks for customer patience as we work to restore service as safely and quickly as possible. The company is coordinating response efforts with state and local emergency management authorities.

The company has opened shelter and warming locations for those without power:

  • Somers, NY: Heritage Hills Activity Center; 8 Heritage Hills Dr. Opened at 4 p.m.
  • Bedford, NY: Town of Bedford; 321 Bedford Rd. Opened at 7 p.m.
