NYSEG Releases Daily Restoration Plan to Restore Customers - 7:00 am

Company working to address all outages

BINGHAMTON, New York — August 9, 2020, 7:00 a.m. — NYSEG, a subsidiary of AVANGRID Inc., released its daily restoration plan for work that will be completed today. The plan includes an overview of the restoration response planned for the day. Currently, approximately 6,300 customers impacted are without power in the company’s Brewster division, which includes Dutchess, Putnam, and Westchester counties. NYSEG announced yesterday that restorations continue to progress quicker than expected, improving the company’s 95% restoration target from Monday at 11 p.m. to today at 11 p.m. NYSEG reiterated it is working hard to further improve its restoration targets and restore power sooner.

Details of today’s work plan include:

Addressing Remaining Outages: The company acknowledged that the remaining customers without power represent the most difficult outages to restore. Many of the locations sustained the heaviest damage, require significant work and impact only a handful of customers. Yesterday’s plan placed crews on every circuit with an outage, and due to the progress of the crews, today’s plan positions crews to address every specific outage. However, the company cautioned that while they are addressing all remaining outages, some of those restorations will likely continue into Monday due to the severity of damage, particularly in areas where complete rebuilds are necessary.

Given the magnitude of work taking place, NYSEG will continue to utilize “runners” to help supply real-time information to its operations team and allow for customer restoration times to be refined as work is underway. As such, the company recommends that customers check their estimated restoration times periodically, as they are subject to change based on damage and complexity of the outages being worked on.

Ensuring Safety of Crews: Addressing every outage will require the work of each field resource. In recent days, the company has added hundreds of additional resources to its response efforts. However, to safely begin addressing every outage, it will require placing multiple crews in the same vicinity and on the same circuits. As a result, the company requests that members of the public remain outside of the work zone, allowing crews to remain focused on their assigned tasks. Additionally, customers may see crews at a work site waiting to begin a task. At times, crews will have to wait for a separate incident elsewhere on the circuit to be cleared before they can begin their work. This is for the safety of the crews, equipment and customers. All crews are being utilized in an efficient manner that will assist in restoring power to customers as quickly and safely as possible.

NYSEG will continue to provide updates throughout the event to the public on the company’s website and social media channels (Facebook and Twitter). The company also offers customers the following reminders to prepare for the storm and stay safe if power outages do occur.

Outage Information:

  • Customers can use the company’s website or the new NYSEG mobile app to report and check the status of outages. To download the application, customers should search “AVANGRID” in the Apple or Android app stores and select “NYSEG.” The application is free to download.

Stay Away From Downed Wires:

  • Stay at least 30 feet from a downed power line.
  • If a downed wire comes in contact with your vehicle, stay inside and wait for help. If you must get out because of fire or other danger, jump clear of the vehicle to avoid any contact with the vehicle and the ground at the same time. Land with your feet together and hop with feet together or shuffle away; don’t run or stride.
  • NYSEG customers should call 1.800.572.1131 to report downed power lines or other hazardous situations.

During a Power Interruption:

  • Contact neighbors to see if their power is off. A loss of power may be the result of a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker.
  • To report a power interruption, contact NYSEG at 1.800.572.1131.
