NYSEG Upgrades to Increase Reliability for Thousands of Pawling Customers

Relocation of the Pawling 509 circuit will bring increased reliability to customers

BINGHAMTON, NY — September 27, 2021 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) announced today it is completing upgrades to its 509 circuit, which delivers power to customers’ homes and businesses, as part of the company’s commitment to provide safe and reliable service to customers. The project will bring increased reliability to more than 4,600 customers in the town of Pawling and is expected to be completed by November.

“Strengthening and improving the quality of infrastructure in our communities are more important than ever because of the serious challenges we are facing from superstorms and climate emergencies,” said Sen. Pete Harckham, New York. “By completing these circuit upgrades, NYSEG is taking responsible actions to ensure reliable service for its customers. These particular infrastructure improvements will benefit the Pawling community for many years to come, and I am grateful to NYSEG for making them a priority.”

To improve reliability for customers, NYSEG is moving a section of the Pawling 509 circuit, running along Route 22, from a heavily wooded and poorly accessible area, to the shoulder of the northbound side of Route 22. This section of circuit is a tie point between two substations and four circuits, two at the Haviland Hollow Substation and two at Pawling Substation. NYSEG will conduct tree trimming on the northbound shoulder of Route 22 to facilitate the construction of the new line, which will include the replacement of 14 poles starting near Akindale Road to the south to Fenwood Drive to the north—a distance of about 2,400 feet. The project is tentatively scheduled for completion at the end of October.

“Moving the circuit out of a heavily wooded area will significantly reduce the number of outages that customers in Pawling experience due to tree damage,” said Richard Schmoll, NYSEG Project Manager, Brewster Electric Operations.

“As storms’ frequency and strength continues to increase season after season, it becomes more important than ever to invest in our infrastructure, especially the reliability and stability of the electrical grid,” said Marc Molinaro, Dutchess County Executive. “We are grateful to NYSEG for prioritizing this area for improvement.”

“NYSEG has been a great partner to the town of Pawling and we are very pleased that they are upgrading our infrastructure,” said James Schmitt, Town of Pawling Supervisor. “This project will provide even more reliable service to a vital area and we look forward to working together in this positive direction.”
