Saratoga County Residents will Experience Improved Reliability Due to NYSEG’s First Non-Wires Alternatives Project

Power quality and load conditions improved for 1,270 residents and small businesses

Part of NYSEG’s ongoing investment in the power grid

BINGHAMTON, NY — September 19, 2023 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) customers in Stillwater, NY will experience increased energy reliability due to a Non-Wires Alternatives (NWA) project that has recently been completed. The project will improve power quality and load conditions for 1,270 residential and small business customers served by the Stillwater substation within Saratoga County. This is NYSEG’s first NWA project commission.

The project includes a 1 MW/2.9 MWh battery energy storage system which will reduce peak demads to eliminate overloads and address reliability concerns served by the Stillwater substation.

“Battery storage is a critical component in the transition to renewable energy production. I am excited that NYSEG is making investments in building out a network of battery storage facilities and I am particularly pleased this new one is located in Stillwater,” said Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner.

“NWA projects improve reliability and power quality while saving customers money because they allow the Company to defer traditional solutions like replacing transformers and wires,” said Joseph Yablonsky, lead engineer, NYSEG NWA Team. “These projects support New York State’s energy and climate goals while improving reliability and exploring alternate infrastructure solutions.”

“The battery power storage unit will be used to provide the village of Stillwater residents ample electricity during high usage times,” said Village of Stillwater Mayor Judy Wood-Shaw. “It will prevent low voltage at peak times.”

The Stillwater NWA project will deliver safe and reliable service at reasonable costs and in an environmentally sound manner, an example of how NYSEG’s investment into the communities it serves makes a difference for its customers.
