19 Lineworkers Graduate from SUNY Broome Lineworker Training Program
Program helps recruit the next generation of lineworkers
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — October 23, 2026 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) today announced the graduation of 19 students from the SUNY Broome Lineworker Training program. The program included more than 20,000 combined hours of on-the-job training across NYSEG’s service area and classroom instruction led by retired NYSEG lineworkers.
“Ensuring a strong energy future is essential,” said Patricia Nilsen, CEO of NYSEG. “It starts with the lineworkers, who work diligently to improve our grid, even during severe weather, and make sure that our communities have safe and reliable service. This partnership is a perfect example of how a talent pipeline helps protect our energy infrastructure for years to come.”
The Lineworker Training Program was launched in April 2024 in partnership with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 10 with a shared goal to develop a skilled workforce for in-demand skilled positions. The program includes a 16-week internship across NYSEG’s territory that features on-the-job and classroom training. Lineworkers also gained experience at NYSEG’s training facility and pole yard in Johnson City.
Lineworkers who graduated received several certifications, including First Aid and CPR, Altec equipment, and OSHA.
“SUNY Broome Community College is thrilled to highlight the hard work, dedication, and resilience of this cohort,” said Danielle Britton, director of training, education, and workforce development at SUNY Broome Community College. “This is not an easy program, it demands physical grit, problem solving, and a commitment to safety and to one another, and our students rose to that challenge.”
Prospective lineworkers are encouraged to reach out to IBEW Local 10 or visit Lineworker Training Program | SUNY Broome for details on future training programs.
