NYSEG and RG&E Continuing Meter Move Out Program

Companies to move natural gas meters outside

Exterior meters make it easier for crews to perform work, less impact on customers, improves safety

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — November 12, 2025 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) are continuing the meter move-out program across their service areas. This is part of a program to move natural gas meters from inside homes and businesses to outdoors. Forty percent of gas meters in RG&E territory are located inside; 22% of meters in NYSEG territory are inside.

“The relocation of meters to outside the customer’s home or business makes it easier for the Companies to gain access to perform mandated inspections and meter work without needing to coordinate activities with the customer,” said Tom Scappaticci, vice president of Gas Engineering and Operations for NYSEG and RG&E. “Outside meters also allow emergency response personnel direct access in the event of safety incidents.”

Customers will receive a notification in the mail when crews are expected to begin work in their neighborhood. To ensure the safety of both customers and crews, the meter relocation work will require that workers enter the home or business to shut off natural gas service for approximately one to three hours. Once the meter is reinstalled, the contractor will need access inside the home or business to relight appliances and ensure everything is working properly.

If required, as part of the last phase of the project, crews will return at a later date to complete restoration around the new meter location. Asphalt and concrete will be restored as needed. In the event that a meter relocation is completed during the winter months, restoration work on the property will be done in the spring as soon as weather permits.

The program began earlier this year. The Companies are investing more than $1.5 million as part of their commitment to ensure the safe and reliable delivery of gas service to customers. The Company has been actively moving natural gas meters outside through other programs, such as Leak Prone Pipe Replacement and service renewals. This initiative focuses on meters not covered by those programs.

Customers with questions are asked to call and refer to the Meter Relocation Pilot Project. For RG&E: 800.743.2110; for NYSEG:800.572.1111
