BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — July 9, 2026 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) has begun upgrades to the West Hill Substation in Ithaca. The project benefits more than 2,700 customers served by this substation and was funded as part of the Company’s last rate case.

“Upgrades to the West Hill Substation is a critical step in strengthening Ithaca’s electric system,” said Marc Geaumont, president of NYSEG. “This investment improves long-term reliability and help ensure that homes, businesses, and other facilities have the power they depend on. This project is part of a nearly $46 million initiative to upgrade multiple substations throughout Ithaca.”

This substation is located at Elm Street in Ithaca and serves approximately 2,765 customers. NYSEG is adding two capacitor banks and replacing two breakers, which will increase capacity, help the station deliver electricity more reliably, reducing outages. Construction is expected to be completed in 2027.

With growing energy demand and increasingly extreme weather, the Company is focused on making investments to strengthen the energy system. These upgrades replace older equipment with newer, more reliable technology to improve service, reduce outages, and keep communities better prepared for severe weather.
