NYSEG Completes $33.5 Million North Brewster Reinforcement Project

The North Brewster Reinforcement Project includes investments in the Dover Plains substation, Pawling substation, and the Amenia substation

The Amenia substation project is the last of the three substation upgrades to be completed and serves 1,767 NYSEG customers

BREWSTER, N.Y. —December 16, 2025 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) has completed improvements at its Amenia substation, which mark the last phase of the North Brewster Reinforcement Project. The Company invested $25.5 million to help improve reliability and capacity at the site.

“NYSEG is steadfast in its mission of not only providing reliable power to our customer but also giving our customers value,” said Marc Geaumont, president of NYSEG. “As Upstate New York’s population and economy grow, it’s our job to ensure that we’re able to meet the new energy demands that are being placed on the grid—and that’s exactly what this project achieves.”

These investments will help ensure that the growing energy demands of the area can be met. The installation of a new transformer will reduce voltage levels to enable the efficient and safe transmission, distribution, and use of electricity. In addition to the capacity benefits, the new transformers will help enhance reliability for customers served directly by the substation and those in surrounding areas.

The investments also included a new control house with a fire protection system and telecom equipment. These additions will help improve the substation’s resiliency and help ensure continued safe power delivery to the community in an era of more frequent and severe storms.

The other parts of the North Brewster Reinforcement Project, Dover Plains substation and Pawling substation, were completed in 2018 and addressed capacity needs in the area.

Since 2023, NYSEG has invested more than $378 million in projects which help keep the power on in homes and businesses. Last year, NYSEG and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) also invested more than $90 million to trim and remove trees and other vegetation near power lines which pose a risk to the electric grid and customer service. The Companies’ commitment to upgrading and modernizing equipment to provide communities with the best service is a focal point of its operations. These investments will reinforce the grid in the face of increasingly severe storms and prepare it for the needs of the future.

“Reliable power isn’t a luxury for our communities — it’s a necessity,” said Assemblyman Anil Beephan. “I want to thank NYSEG for making this $33.5 million investment in the North Brewster Reinforcement Project and for completing the Amenia substation upgrades. These improvements will strengthen our local grid, help protect families and businesses during severe storms, and support future growth in our region. I’m grateful to NYSEG’s leadership, engineers, and line workers for their continued commitment to keeping our communities safe and powered.”
