NYSEG Completes Fraser Substation, Marking Significant Milestone in Oneonta Transmission Project
Substation in Oneonta part of multi-phase project to improve energy reliability and increase capacity for thousands of customers
ONEONTA, N.Y. — September 8, 2026 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) has completed upgrades to the Fraser Substation in Oneonta, marking a major milestone in a multi-phase project designed to strengthen reliability, improve grid resilience, and support growing energy needs for tens of thousands of customers throughout the region.
“We’re very proud to complete this important phase of the project in Delaware County,” said Marc Geaumont, president of NYSEG. “The upgraded and expanded substation will help meet the growing demand for additional power in the Fraser and Delhi communities, support expanded economic development, and improve our transmission system as a whole.”
The Fraser Substation is located on Hamden Hill Road and was originally built in 1969. NYSEG expanded the existing substation with a new 115-kilovolt substation yard. This addition allows the site to connect multiple high-voltage transmission lines, which are used to carry large amounts of electricity across the region to other substations which then provide the energy for safe use in a customer’s home or business. The Company also upgraded the existing 345-kV substation yard by adding a new transformer to support future energy demands.
The project aligns with federal reliability standards that define which high-voltage facilities are part of the bulk electric system. This helps ensure the grid can operate reliably across the region.
This upgrade to Fraser Substation is the first phase of NYSEG’s Oneonta South Area Improvements Project. Future work includes rerouting and installing new transmission lines and improvements to the Delhi Substation located on Sherwood Road. NYSEG anticipates beginning work at the Delhi Substation this year and completion of the entire project in 2027.
