NYSEG Completes Substation Replacement Project in Willet

New substation will improve reliability for 7,000 customers in Southern Tier

BINGHAMTON, NY — November 12, 2021 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) announced today it has completed the replacement of the Willet substation, which delivers power to customers’ homes and businesses, as part of the company’s commitment to provide safe and reliable service to customers. The substation serves approximately 7,000 customers in Cincinnatus, Marathon, McDonough, South Otselic, Whitney Point and Willet. It also serves as a backup power source for Greene.

To improve reliability for customers, NYSEG retired the original substation and constructed a brand new substation on the same lot on State Route 221 in Willet. The substation serves as a mid-point between substations in Etna and East Norwich. The project began in Spring 2020 and was designed to provide space for two station transformers instead of the single transformer previously operating at capacity.

“The new Willet substation provides greater system operating flexibility and improves the control and reliability of the electric grid in Broome, Cortland and Chenango counties,” said Kevin Rice, NYSEG manager, substation operations. “Previously, the Willet substation could only accommodate one transformer. We have since relocated that to the new substation and installed a second, newer transformer that we can control remotely, allowing for faster response times and reduced downtime."
