NYSEG Completes Upgrades at Cobble Hill Substation in Western New York
Substation serves more than 3,700 customers in Boston, Colden, East Concord, and Glenwood
Upgrades will improve energy reliability and capacity for customers
LANCASTER, N.Y. — June 16, 2026 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) has completed its upgrades to the Cobble Hill Substation, which will improve reliability, resilience, and capacity for customers in the towns of Boston, Colden, East Concord, and Glenwood. This substation serves approximately 3,700 customers in Western New York. The investment is part of Avangrid and NYSEG’s investment plan to improve grid infrastructure through 2030 to meet the growing energy demands on homes and businesses and protect the community against severe weather events.
“This substation was a priority for us because it supports energy capacity and reliability for our customers in Erie County,” said Marc Geaumont, president of NYSEG. “For some time, customers in this community were reliant on a mobile substation to power their homes and businesses. Now that the work is completed, we can use our mobile substation to improve reliability in other communities in need.”
The substation is located on Hunn Road and is approximately 50 years old. This spring, NYSEG procured a 56 MVA transformer which will provide the energy load for the community.
“Reliable electric service is essential to the safety, economy, and quality of life of the Town of Boston,” said Jason Keding, Town of Boston supervisor. “NYSEG’s investment in the Cobble Hill Substation represents a significant upgrade to critical infrastructure that serves many residents and businesses in our community and neighboring towns.”
“This is fantastic for our residents in this part of the Town of Concord,” said Phil Drozd, Town of Concord town supervisor. “Knowing that NYSEG recognized a problem area and invested dollars to remedy shows me they care about their customers. Myself and the other Supervisors from the towns this substation services were treated to a tour of the facility and had the upgrades explained to us. The NYSEG staff was very professional and answered all of our questions.”
With growing demand, more extreme weather, and increased electrification, the Companies are focused on making smart investments in the energy system. These upgrades replace older equipment with newer, more reliable technology to improve service, reduce outages, and keep communities better prepared for severe weather.
