NYSEG Expects Full Restoration from Winter Storm Today - 6:45 am

System Suffers Significant Damage as a Result of Heavy Wet Snow

BINGHAMTON, New York — Dec. 3, 2019, 6:45 a.m. EST — NYSEG a subsidiary of AVANGRID, Inc., continues to restore power after heavy wet snow and wintry conditions disrupted service to thousands of customers. The company announced that it expects to achieve full restoration of their system by 10 p.m. today. As a result of the storm, more than 45,000 NYSEG customers have been impacted. Currently, more than 6,000 customers are without power. The hardest hit areas include the Twin Tier and Southern Tier regions of the state, which include Allegany, Broome, Cattaraugus, Schuyler, Steuben, Sullivan and Wyoming counties. Assessments of the impact indicate significant damage to the electric system, including in off-road areas that will be difficult to quickly access and repair. Company personnel continue to evaluate the damage in these challenging areas and refine estimated times of restoration. Despite the tough conditions, crews will continue to work until every customer is restored. Additional resources have also been mobilized from neighboring locations to support those already in the field.

Much of the damage experienced is a result of the heavy wet snow that has the brought down trees and limbs, causing damage to overhead power lines and other electrical equipment. NYSEG reminds the public to exercise extreme caution if traveling, as outages attributed to motor vehicle accidents involving electric poles and equipment have resulted in a significant number of outages.

The company’s storm teams have been engaged throughout the event, planning and dispatching crews and equipment to necessary areas. Currently, hundreds of field resources are engaged in the company’s storm response effort, with additional mutual aid resources reinforcing ongoing efforts. The company is also coordinating preparations with state and local emergency management authorities.

NYSEG will provide updates throughout the event to the general public on their website and social media channels (Facebook and Twitter). The company also offers customers the following reminders to prepare for the storm and stay safe if power outages do occur.
