NYSEG Gas Outage in Elmira Division Requires Temporary Service Disconnection for More Than 600 Customers - 1pm

The company is working to restore all customers starting today following an unexpected issue with gas supplier

BINGHAMTON, New York — January 16, 2023 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) is reaching out to customers in the following areas today to notify them of a natural gas outage which will require in-person, house-to-house visits for re-energization: portions of Yates, Steuben, and Schuyler Counties including the Towns of Dundee, Hammondsport, Tyrone, and Wayne. NYSEG natural gas customers in these areas experienced a gas outage in the early morning of January 16 due to a supplier issue. A full shut-down is being performed by NYSEG natural gas personnel for more than 600 customers as a safety precaution subsequent to the outage, and after clearing the delivery system, those customers will each have their service turned back on manually to safely relight gas appliances.

This is expected to be a multi-day event, and customers are encouraged to access our Outage Resources for tips on safety and staying warm. Customers may see NYSEG field technicians in their neighborhood as natural gas meters impacted by low pressure are disconnected, so they are able to safely clear the delivery system. To ensure safety, field personnel may utilize the assistance of local fire departments and locksmiths to gain access to meters and will make every effort to leave property in the same condition as before. Once this work is completed, technicians will then require access to turn gas service back on and relight any gas appliances.

In the event of a gas emergency, customers should contact NYSEG at 800.572.1121 or 911 from a safe location. Customers should ensure functionality of their CO detectors and replace batteries as needed.
