NYSEG Invests $83 Million to Rebuild South Perry Substation

Major substation provides reliable energy to more than 8,500 customers

Estimated completion in 2029

PERRY, N.Y. — September 15, 2025 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) has begun construction to modernize the South Perry Substation in Wyoming County. The $83 million upgrade will replace decades-old infrastructure and increase energy reliability for more than 8,500 customers in the community.

“The South Perry Substation has been in operation for more than 60 years and requires significant updates to fit today’s energy needs,” said Marc Geaumont, president of NYSEG. “Customers served by this substation are exposed to outage risks if a single component of the current configuration were to fail. This project will provide additional safeguards that will help to ensure the power will stay on for thousands of customers.”

This substation is located on Middle Reservation Road and features two separate facilities. NYSEG previously invested $23 million to upgrade the western yard in the first phase of the project in 2019. While those first phase upgrades improved energy reliability, the substation’s eastern portion has been in service since the 1950s. The scope of the new construction includes a full rebuild of the eastern yard and additional upgrades to the western yard. The rebuild will include new energy infrastructure, including transformers, capacitor banks, and other equipment.

The South Perry substation is critical for energy reliability for customers in Silver Springs, Perry, Warsaw, and Mount Morris. Energy transmitted to the South Perry Substation feeds into smaller substations which serve customers directly. Among the customers is Letchworth State Park.

Since 2023, NYSEG and RG&E have invested more than $582 million in large capital projects. The Companies continue to prioritize dependable energy for their customers and are investing significantly in ongoing and future projects that will benefit approximately 1.9 million customers in the state.

“The news of NYSEG’s $83 million investment in the South Perry Substation is tremendous for our district,” said Assemblyman David DiPietro (R, C-East Aurora). “These upgrades will replace outdated infrastructure and enhance energy reliability for over 8,500 residents and businesses, including the iconic Letchworth State Park. I commend NYSEG for its commitment to strengthening our energy grid and ensuring our residents have dependable power now and in the future.”

“Living in a rural area, I know firsthand how important these upgrades are for families, farms, and small businesses,” said State Senator George Borrello, who represents the 57th State Senate District, which includes Wyoming County. “Reliable energy isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity, whether it’s keeping the lights on at home, powering our local schools and hospitals, or supporting the businesses that keep our rural economies going. I appreciate NYSEG’s investment in Perry and Wyoming County, and I know this project will make a real difference for the more than 8,500 customers who depend on this substation every single day.”

Construction on the new substation is expected to be completed in 2029.
