NYSEG is Responding to Gas Outage - 7pm

The company is working to restore all customers following an unexpected issue with gas supplier

BINGHAMTON, New York — January 16, 2023 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) is responding to a natural gas outage which will require in-person, house-to-house visits for re-energization in portions of Yates, Steuben, and Schuyler Counties starting this evening.

NYSEG natural gas customers in these areas experienced a gas outage early this morning due to a supplier issue. Restoration is being performed by natural gas personnel for the more than 600 customers affected, and those customers will each have their service turned back on manually to safely relight gas appliances, beginning tonight. Customers should not attempt to turn on gas themselves.

Customers may see NYSEG field technicians or qualified personnel from additional resources the Company has called in to assist with this emergency in their neighborhood. Technicians will require access to turn gas service back on and relight any gas appliances. Before entering a home, those field personnel will present a badge from either Avangrid or one of the following gas companies: Berkshire Gas, Connecticut Natural Gas, National Fuel, National Grid, Rochester Gas and Electric, or Southern Connecticut Gas. Some contract resources also are assisting and will present identification.

Field technicians will be working to restore service, home by home through midnight tonight and starting at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, January 17. If customers see a crew on their road after midnight and would like technicians to restore service for them after this time, they can turn on their lights and signal a crew member or call 800.572.1121 to indicate they are awake and available. Crews will work all night to restore as many as possible, based on customer availability. To ensure safety, if they are not able to gain access, field personnel may utilize the assistance of local law enforcement agencies and locksmiths to gain access to meters, and light pilot lights. They will make every effort to leave property in the same condition as before.

This is expected to be a multi-day event, and customers are encouraged to access our Outage Resources for tips on safety and staying warm. In the event of a gas emergency, customers should contact NYSEG at 800.572.1121 or 911 from a safe location. Customers should ensure functionality of their CO detectors and replace batteries as needed.
