9:30 PM NYSEG Responding after Severe Thunderstorms Disrupt Service for Thousands of Customers
Restoration expected for majority of customers in Brewster division by 10:30 PM
Crews will continue working through the night to restore power to other divisions as quickly as possible on holiday weekend
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — July 3, 2025 — New York Electric & Gas (NYSEG) is responding as severe thunderstorms swept through the eastern part of New York Thursday afternoon, impacting portions of NYSEG’s service area. In total, more than 49,000 customers lost power during the storm’s peak. So far, 55% of impacted customers have been restored. The greatest impact is in the Binghamton division (Broome, Chenango, Tioga counties), where 13,700 customers remain without power. 2,200 customers in the Liberty division (Orange, Sullivan, Delaware, Ulster counties) are without power. 2,600 customers in the Ithaca division (Cayuga, Chemung, Cortland, Schuyler, Seneca, Tioga, Tompkins counties) are without power. 1,500 customers in the Brewster division (Dutchess, Putnam, Westchester counties) are without power, with restoration expected by 10:30 tonight.
Today’s strong thunderstorms brought high wind gusts. Initial reports from the field indicate that the severe weather caused downed trees and tree limbs, broken poles, and downed wires throughout the region. NYSEG storm response teams are fully engaged with crews working to assess the damage, make safe downed wires, clear fallen tree debris from the roads, and restore power, when it is safe and possible to do so. The Company will bring in additional lineworkers and tree crew personnel to help with restoration efforts. Crews will work through the night to restore power to all customers.
NYSEG urges customers to remain away from storm debris as it may contain downed wires or other damaged equipment. Customers should assume all downed wires are energized and dangerous and should be reported by calling NYSEG’s emergency line at 1.800.572.1131 or contacting 911.
NYSEG will continue to provide updates throughout the event on the company’s social media channels (Facebook and X). The company also offers customers the following reminders to stay safe when power outages occur.
