NYSEG Responding as Storms Continue to Move Across State - 10 pm

Crews will work overnight to restore power to customers impacted by severe thunderstorms on Sunday

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — July 24, 2022, 10 p.m. — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) is responding after strong winds and heavy rain associated with severe thunderstorms continue to move across the state. Currently, approximately 15,000 customers are without power of the more than 50,000 total customers impacted. The hardest hit areas are NYSEG’s Binghamton (1,360), Elmira (1,380), Ithaca (2,500), Liberty (1,450) and Oneonta (7,850) divisions, which include portions of Broome, Cayuga, Chenango, Chemung, Cortland, Delaware, Greene, Herkimer, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Orange, Otsego, Seneca, Schoharie, Schuyler, Steuben, Sullivan, Tioga, Tompkins, and Ulster counties.

The company’s storm response teams are fully engaged and had pre-staged crews earlier today in advance of the storms. Scattered thunderstorms are expected throughout the night. As it is safe to do so, crews will work through the overnight hours and until every customer is restored.

Crews are currently working to assess the damage, make safe downed wires, clear fallen tree debris from the roads and restore power when possible. After the final round of storms pass and during the daylight hours, the company will be able to complete further damage assessment to identify the extent of the damage caused by the weather event. The company is also coordinating response efforts with state and local emergency management authorities.

Early reports indicate damage from the storm includes downed power lines and broken poles. The company urges customers to remain away from storm debris, particularly in the overnight hours, as it may contain downed wires or other damaged equipment. All downed wires should be assumed as energized and be reported by calling NYSEG’s emergency line at 800.572.1131 or contacting 911.

NYSEG will continue to provide updates throughout the event to the general public on the company’s social media channels (Facebook and Twitter). The company also offers customers the following reminders to stay safe.
