NYSEG Responding to Outages in Brewster Division

23,000 customers have been impacted by high winds and thunderstorms

Brewster, NY — July 5, 2026 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) is responding to outages in the Hudson Valley caused by high winds and thunderstorms. Approximately 23,000 customers in NYSEG’s Brewster Division, which includes Dutchess, Putnam and Westchester counties, have been impacted with the peak customer impacts at 7:55 PM Saturday night. Overnight, crews restored power to approximately 5,000 customers. As of 11:00 AM on Sunday morning, approximately 18,000 customers remain without power.

Crews will continue to assess damage and clear roadways of downed wires and storm debris to allow for emergency vehicle access. They will also make critical network repairs as safely and quickly as possible. This includes setting poles to replace those broken in the storm and repairing numerous downed wires.  The company has mobilized employees for storm response and has deployed additional tree and line crews from other areas of NY and Maine to help restore service.

Crews will be working to safely restore service to customers as soon as possible and will continue restoration efforts today. Due to the extent of damage to the area already assessed by crews, the Company anticipates that restoration efforts will extend to Monday, with the possibility of restoration continuing to Tuesday for a smaller number of customers in the most damaged areas. There may be customers with damage to their homes or businesses that need to make repairs before they can have service reconnected. In those instances, the Company will work with the customers to coordinate their restoration. Crews will be working in shifts throughout the day and overnight to continue efforts.

How to Stay Up-to-Date

NYSEG will continue to provide updates throughout the event on its websites and social media channels (Facebook, Instagram and X). Customers should also sign up for email alerts and download the NYSEG mobile app to get the most up-to-date information.

Safety Tips

The Company offers the following reminders as the storm continues to impact the region to stay safe if power outages occur.

  • Sign up for Outage Alerts to receive updates automatically by phone, text, or email as the Company updates the status of the restoration process in their area. Customers can sign up for outage alerts by visiting here.
  • Keep battery-operated flashlights and radios on hand, along with supplies of drinking water and non-perishable foods.
  • Make sure that smart phones, tablets, and other mobile devices are fully charged.
  • Fill your car’s fuel tank.

Stay away from downed wires:

  • Stay at least 30 feet from a downed power line.
  • If a downed wire comes in contact with your vehicle, stay inside and wait for help. If you must get out because of fire or other danger, jump clear of the vehicle to avoid any contact with the vehicle and the ground at the same time. Land with your feet together and hop with feet together or shuffle away; don’t run or stride.
  • Customers should call 1.800. 572.1131 to report downed power lines or other hazardous situations.

During a power interruption:

  • Contact neighbors to see if their power is off. A loss of power may be the result of a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker.
  • Keep refrigerators and freezers closed as much as possible. Most food will last 24 hours if you minimize the opening of refrigerator and freezer doors.

Power restoration priorities:

The Company’s first priority is to respond to reports of downed power lines to keep the public safe.  Customers are asked to call 1.800.572.1131  â€¯to report downed wires.

Once this vital public safety work is complete, the company will:

  • Assess the damage to the electricity delivery system.
  • Develop a detailed restoration plan.
  • Make repairs as quickly as possible.
