Penn Yan Airport among customers to benefit from upgrades

PENN YAN, N.Y. — July 29, 2025 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) today announced it has resumed construction on the Milo Substation in Penn Yan, New York. The Company is investing $19.5 million to update the substation, which was originally constructed in the late 1950s, along with five miles of lines. The updates will increase reliability, resiliency, and capacity for 850 customers, including Penn Yan Airport.

“Energy demand continues to rise,” said Marc Geaumont, president of NYSEG. “It’s our goal to ensure energy reliability in the communities we serve. By rebuilding the Milo Substation, customers in Yates County should notice fewer outages for years to come.”

The Milo Substation is located on Second Milo Road in Penn Yan. NYSEG will conduct a full rebuild of this substation to include a new 14 MVA transformer, which will supply upgraded voltage. The upgraded circuit will benefit residential and commercial customers, including the Penn Yan Airport’s load demand. This rebuild will also accommodate future energy needs because the new substation can accept an additional circuit, if necessary.

This investment is part of NYSEG’s more than $7 billion in investments statewide to modernize critical grid infrastructure through 2030, meet the growing energy demands of homes and businesses, and protect the community against severe weather threats.

"Yates County and The Town of Milo are pleased to see NYSEG’s investment in our community through the Milo Substation upgrade,” said Leslie Church, Legislative Chair of Yates County and Town of Milo Supervisor. “Reliable infrastructure is essential to the well-being of our residents and the success of local businesses, including critical facilities like the Penn Yan Airport. We appreciate NYSEG’s commitment to modernizing our energy systems and preparing our town for future growth."

NYSEG estimates the project will be completed and in service by the end of 2025.
