NYSEG Trimming More Than 50 Miles of Electric Lines in Addison

ADDISON, N.Y. — November 11, 2020 — NYSEG announced today it recently started proactive tree trimming work in the town of Addison to protect its systems against and reduce the impact of severe weather. The efforts will stretch roughly 54 miles throughout Addison, covering the entire town. It will include trimming on every high voltage power line in the area within the company’s right-of-way, which is property a utility can access to manage trees and other vegetation, among other things.
 
“Trees, branches and foliage are a leading cause of power interruptions,” said Justin Raynor, Distribution Forester for the Elmira Division at NYSEG. “When damaged or broken during storms, this vegetation can take down power lines or poles and cause outages. For this reason, NYSEG invests significant resources to proactively conduct tree trimming throughout our service area. With the winter months approaching, this trimming will also help to protect our infrastructure when snow and ice builds up and weighs down vegetation.”

This year, NYSEG has trimmed more than 3,000 miles of distribution lines across its service area. This involves pruning or removing trees and vegetation that could come into contact with its power lines. Additionally, the company prioritizes addressing worst performing circuits, which deliver power to customers’ homes and businesses, and circuits that greatly impact reliability.

The company’s work in Addison will focus on roadside and backyard maintenance tree trimming, with the majority of work taking place on roadside. In addition to routine maintenance tree trimming, NYSEG crews will patrol the region for hazard trees to evaluate and pursue future full tree removals. 
NYSEG advises customers that temporary and minor traffic delays may occur during the project period. The company also asks that motorist use extra caution when near crews and work zones.
