NYSEG’s Meyer Substation Increases Capacity with Installation of New Transformer

DANSVILLE, N.Y. — July 15, 2026 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) has added a new transformer to the Meyer Substation that doubles the capacity of its predecessor. The upgrade is an integral part of the rebuild at the substation and marks a significant milestone in the Company’s efforts to strengthen the electric grid.

The first phase of the Meyer Substation rebuild was funded by the Company’s 2023 rate case that was approved by the Public Service Commission. Once completed this fall, the project will improve reliability, resiliency, and capacity for approximately 6,740 customers in the Village of Dansville and surrounding communities. Thousands more customers across New York will also benefit because of upgrades to the transmission system.

“The Meyer Substation was originally built in 1948 and has done a remarkable job serving customers for generations,” said Marc Geaumont, president of NYSEG. “While this substation has been active for more than 70 years, the energy demands of today require modern infrastructure. These upgrades are essential to maintaining a strong grid, reducing outages, and helping customers stay connected during periods of extreme weather.”

The Meyer Substation is a major facility that supports NYSEG’s transmission and distribution systems.  As part of the transmission system, it delivers energy to several smaller substations located throughout the Company’s service area. As part of the distribution system, it directly serves customers in Dansville by stepping down voltage and delivering electricity through its distribution lines.

The first phase of the project is critical to improving energy capacity and reliability on the grid and is expected to be completed this fall. In addition to a new transformer, the Company has installed new breakers and additional support that can prevent outages for customers.

The second phase upgrade is expected to begin by the end of this year. NYSEG will add two more transformers and redeploy a current transformer to help further increase capacity. The Company will also install components that support future capacity growth. The next project phase is expected to be completed in 2029.

“The completion of this phase of the Meyer Substation project is great news for Dansville and the surrounding communities,” said Assemblywoman Andrea K. Bailey. “Reliable and affordable energy is essential for our residents, businesses, farms, and local organizations. These upgrades will strengthen the electric grid, improve service reliability, and provide the capacity needed to support future growth. As we continue to promote economic development in the southern portion of the 133rd Assembly District, investments like this help position our communities for new business opportunities, job creation, and long-term success.”

"Additional power capacity and resiliency are the primary challenges we face in rural communities with economic development,” said William Bacon, director of Livingston County Economic Development. “The investment in the Meyer Substation will address both of these concerns and provide a solid future to help build tax base and add growth to our communities."

“NYSEG’s proactive investment in the Meyer Substation has been critical to supporting economic growth in Steuben County,” said Jamie Johnson, Executive Director of the Steuben County IDA. “The additional system capacity helped the Steuben County IDA attract Bonatrans’ first North American manufacturing facility to the Wayland Business Park, creating 85 new jobs for the community. We look forward to continuing our partnership with NYSEG to support Bonatrans’ growth and future economic development opportunities made possible by the Meyer expansion.”

NYSEG and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) are committed to strengthening the grid to help keep the lights on for homes and businesses throughout New York State. Continued investments to modernize aging infrastructure will help improve reliability, efficiency, and resiliency in an era of more extreme weather. Upgraded infrastructure can help minimize outages, address immediate capacity needs, deploy more automation devices for resiliency, and other upgrades to support New York’s energy goals.
