Two New Mobile Substations added to NYSEG and RG&E’s Fleet
Mobile substations provide energy during emergency and planned outages
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — December 15, 2025 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) has commissioned two new mobile substations, bringing the total fleet to 24 active mobile substations between NYSEG and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E). These mobile substations will be used to ensure energy reliability for the nearly 1.3 million electric customers across New York.
“Mobile substations are incredibly vital to maintaining the electrical system’s reliability,” said Marc Geaumont, president of NYSEG. “Extreme weather is constantly testing the resilience of our grid. While we continue to make monumental strides in upgrading our network, these mobile substations help ensure customers can continue their daily lives uninterrupted.”
NYSEG and RG&E use mobile substations when there are emergency outages, planned outages, or other scenarios where additional energy load is required. The mobile substations connect to the current grid and temporarily bypass the permanent substations while they undergo maintenance. Because the mobile substations can be easily transported, they are used throughout NYSEG and RG&E territories as needed. Mobile substations are most commonly operated at a site for a period ranging from several hours to up to a year, depending on the type of need.
The two new mobile substations, which were purchased using funds from the last rate case in 2023, will replace two older units in the current fleet. The new mobile substations have additional features to improve worker safety.
NYSEG deployed a mobile substation from Plattsburgh for several hours following a prolonged outage at the Colliers substation in March, which impacted more than 1,000 customers in NYSEG’s Oneonta division. After repairs were made to the permanent substation, the mobile substation was transported back to Plattsburgh, where it remains on standby.
NYSEG and R&GE have proposed to invest $16.1 billion to update grid infrastructure in New York through 2031. These investments will enhance energy quality and reliability for customers in NYSEG and RG&E’s service area, which spans more than 40 percent of Upstate New York.
