BINGHAMTON, NY — July 9, 2021, 1 p.m. — NYSEG is continuing to respond after severe thunderstorms impacted the region early Thursday morning. Currently, approximately 3,200 customers out of the more than 20,500 total impacted customers in the company’s Binghamton division are without power. Based on current damage assessments and the progress of restoration, the company announced that it expects to complete restorations for impacted customers by 8 p.m. on Saturday. The company will continue to further refine specific restoration times as the response effort progresses and encourages customers to check for updates via their website or FREE Mobile App.

Informal reports from the field indicate a significant amount of tree damage, which has resulted in hundreds of downed wires, many broken poles and hazards that have required crews to make safe. So far, the company has reported 272 downed wires as a result of this storm. Crews are also working to repair additional damage found in areas where restorations are occurring, including additional pole damage.

The company continues to coordinate its response with state and local emergency management officials.

Stay Away From Downed Wires

  • Stay at least 30 feet from a downed power line.
  • If a downed wire comes in contact with your vehicle, stay inside and wait for help. If you must get out because of fire or other danger, jump clear of the vehicle to avoid any contact with the vehicle and the ground at the same time. Land with your feet together and hop with feet together or shuffle away; don’t run or stride.
  • NYSEG customers should call 800.572.1131 to report downed power lines or other hazardous situations.

During a Power Interruption

  • Contact neighbors to see if their power is off. A loss of power may be the result of a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker.

  • Keep refrigerators and freezers closed as much as possible. Most food will last 24 hours if you minimize the opening of refrigerator and freezer doors.
