In The Environment
Our Approach
We are committed to responsible business practices that advance community well-being, preserve natural resources, and benefit future generations.
Our sustainable business strategy focuses on building resiliency to adapt to a changing world. Infrastructure resiliency can help us respond to emerging threats, such as increasingly severe weather patterns. Avoiding impacts to nature and minimizing waste can help secure the supply of natural resources we all rely on. Advancing new energy technologies can help improve efficiency and manage the country’s need for more power.
Initiatives at NYSEG
-
Investing in infrastructure resiliency and reliability. These types of projects, such as upgrades to the Dingle Ridge substation and surrounding lines, protect our infrastructure and customers against the risks of increasingly extreme weather. You can learn more in our Climate Vulnerability Study and Resilience Plan.
-
Empowering customers to make responsible decisions. This includes supporting the interconnection of customer energy sources like solar, enabling access to smart energy solutions like electric vehicles (EVs), and promoting energy efficiency savings programs available to residential customers and business customers. We also offer a Catch The Wind Program, which gives customers the option to offset the emissions footprint associated with their electricity use.
-
Innovating for the future. These types of initiatives include smart energy solutions like Utility Thermal Energy Networks, which can deliver clean heating and cooling to customers using the natural temperature of the earth, and the installation of smart meters, which offer customers more ways to understand and manage energy use.
-
Preserving our natural resources. This includes wildlife and biodiversity protection efforts such as the protection of ospreys when they nest on utility poles, tree-planting, and achieving the Pollinator Steward certification from the Pollinator Partnership.
-
Reducing emissions in natural gas operations. Natural gas is an integral part of our energy system and will continue to be as energy demand grows. Our goal is to deliver responsible reductions in emissions over time while continuing to meet our public service obligation. To lower our emissions impact, we invest in replacing aging gas pipeline, which helps reduce stray emissions, called “fugitive emissions”. We also integrate renewable natural gas into the distribution system through facilities in Flemming, Homer, Auburn, and Sennett.
