NYSEG and RG&E Customers Purchased More Than 64 Million Kilowatt-Hours of Wind Energy in 2014
Program Again Recognized by National Renewable Energy Laboratory

Rochester, NY – In 2014, customers of NYSEG and RG&E, subsidiaries of Iberdrola USA, bought 64 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean, renewable wind energy – enough to power more than 4,000 typical homes for a year – through the companies’ Catch the Wind program.

At NYSEG, 2014 sales of Catch the Wind renewable energy were approximately 47 million kWh and at RG&E 2014 sales were approximately 17 million kWh. At the close of 2014, more than 13,500 NYSEG customers and more than 4,900 RG&E customers were enrolled in the program.

Once again, the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory has recognized the Catch the Wind Program based on number of participants. NYSEG and RG&E together have the ninth most green power program participants among the nation’s utilities.

“Our Catch the Wind programs are more than a decade old, and we continue to see strong support from our customers,” said Mark S. Lynch, president and CEO of NYSEG and RG&E. “Offering our customers the opportunity to purchase clean, renewable wind energy is a natural fit with our commitment to environmental stewardship.”

Purchasing wind energy directly benefits the environment by reducing the need for fossil-fuel generation right here in New York. The estimated environmental benefits of the 2014 sales of wind energy at NYSEG and RG&E include the reduction of approximately 44,131 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. That is the equivalent of removing approximately 9,291 passenger vehicles from the road or the carbon sequestered by approximately 36,173 acres of trees. Renewable energy sources also help avoid sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides emissions.

NYSEG’s wind energy program began in August 2002; RG&E’s program began in April 2004. The programs are offered in partnership with Community Energy Inc., a leading developer and marketer of renewable energy.
