NYSEG Continues to Invest in Elmira Grid

One substation energized, with another in the works

Upgrades increase reliability, resiliency, and capacity for customers

ELMIRA, NY — July 27, 2023 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) continues to invest in the Company’s Elmira Division by upgrading and rebuilding substations, ensuring customers receive safe and reliable energy.

The upgrade project on the Woodlawn substation began in 2021 and was completed in May 2023, when the substation was energized. The upgrades increased capacity and reliable service, benefiting 4,500 customers. To execute the project, more than 25 individuals were employed, generating individual and local business economic benefits.

“Investing in our grid is an important facet of our operations at NYSEG,” said Trish Nilsen, president and CEO of NYSEG. “This project will mean less frequent and shorter duration outages for our customers in Elmira, and increasing our reliable service in this manner is a top priority for us.”

The Hillcrest Substation is in the process of a complete rebuild, with three control structures that were constructed off-site and safely arrived in Elmira in June. The upgrades will improve the safety and reliability of service to more than 4,000 customers. NYSEG designed the upgrades with the community in mind, focusing on safe transport of the structures through careful planning, traffic control, and coordination among several NYSEG functions. This included working with the transportation contractor to schedule delivery while local children were in school – all in an effort to minimize disruption to the community while the Company completed this important work.

NYSEG continues to prioritize customers by upgrading and modernizing aging infrastructure, investing in our communities using smart technology to improve reliability and service.
