Natural Gas Meter Exchanges
As part of our natural gas meter retirement project to remove old, obsolete meters, some customers within our natural gas service area may have their natural gas meter exchanged. We will also upgrade these exchanged meters with a natural gas smart meter module and complete other work during our visit to ensure continued reliable, safe energy to your home or business. We’ve partnered with our authorized contractor, Bermex, to complete this work.
Are you exchanging my natural gas meter?
We are only exchanging select natural gas meters as part of our work to remove old, obsolete meters. You will receive a letter if we’re scheduled to exchange the natural gas meter at your location and we’ll also follow up with a phone call from 585.822.6604 to schedule a convenient appointment. Make sure your phone number is up to date by logging into your My Account.
Who do I contact for an appointment or if I don’t want a smart meter?
You can contact us at 585.822.6604 to schedule an appointment. Our team is available 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
Smart meters provide many benefits, and we’d encourage you to review some of the information we have available. Learn more about smart meters and visit our Resource Center for common questions. If you are a residential customer, you can request to opt out by contacting our team at the above number. The current monthly opt-out fee is $13.47 and is subject to change in the future. We’ll still need to exchange your natural gas meter, but will replace it without the smart meter module.
What can I expect after scheduling my appointment?
Please make sure an adult over the age of 18 is present for your appointment time. When we arrive, we’ll need access to the natural gas meter and your natural gas appliances. We’ll inspect your appliances before the exchange and after while relighting to make sure everything is working safely and explain anything that may require your contractor’s repair. Your natural gas service will be turned off temporarily for the meter exchange and we’ll install a natural gas meter with a smart meter module attached. If your meter is inside, we’ll also complete a required safety inspection on exposed piping and use equipment to check for any leaks and ensure your safety. You can learn more about this required inspection here.
Why does the natural gas meter need to be exchanged?
The New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) requires meter exchanges and testing for all utilities on an annual basis. As a result, each year we remove, replace and test a sampling of meters across our service area to ensure they continue to meet high operating standards. As part of this work, we’ll be replacing older, obsolete equipment with new meters that include our standard smart meter module.
