NYSEG and RG&E Receive Approval to Upgrade Grid

Project in Hornell Division will bring more renewable energy to Upstate New York


BINGHAMTON, NY – March 2, 2023 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) received approval from the New York State Public Service Commission to upgrade their transmission system, creating pathways for nearly 2 Gigawatts of existing and planned renewable energy facilities in the State’s Southern Tier.

The Companies plan to invest in upgrades to their transmission system, largely in NYSEG’s Hornell Division, which includes Allegany, Cattaraugus, Steuben, Wyoming, Livingston, and Yates Counties, as part of their investment into service, reliability, and clean energy goals in the communities they serve.

“These upgrades are critical to meeting AVANGRID’s and New York State’s climate action goals, including achieving 70 percent renewable energy by 2030,” said Alan Trotta, senior director of Regulatory Services at AVANGRID. “While the primary goal of this transmission investment is to enable the flow of renewable energy, the upgrades will also enhance electric reliability by replacing aging infrastructure with new, more resilient equipment.”

The planned transmission upgrades in Hornell will be primarily within, or adjacent to, existing transmission corridors, which will minimize disruptions to the communities in the Companies’ service area.
