NYSEG Planning Upgrades for Grid in Binghamton

Upgrades will improve reliable service for customers

NYSEG has upgraded 7 substations across its service area since 2020

BINGHAMTON, NY — August 17, 2023 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) is planning upgrades for substations and transmission lines located in the Company’s Binghamton division. The upgrades support the provision of safe and reliable energy while moving toward clean energy goals set by New York State’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA).

“Upgrading our aging grid is a priority over the next several years,” said NYSEG President and CEO Trish Nilsen. “These projects will improve reliability for our customers, which is important in a time when storms are increasing in both frequency and severity in the Northeast.”

The project will include upgrading the Oakdale substation (located on Robinson Hill Rd. in Johnson City) and relocating the Westover substation (Commerce Rd. in Johnson City), which will require the re-routing of two miles of new 34.5 and 115 kilovolt (kV) lines and the rebuilding of three existing 115 kV lines, eleven 34.5 kV lines, and four 4.8 kV lines. The Oakdale substation and Westover substation together serve approximately 6,515 customers.

Upgrades will repair and replace aging infrastructure, improve electric transmission, and meet new standard and security protocols, increasing overall resiliency, reliability, and capacity. The project is expected to commence at the end of 2024 or early 2025.

NYSEG is committed to upgrading and modernizing aging infrastructure to provide customers with the best service.
