NYSEG’s Infrastructure Upgrades to Provide Additional Power Source to Putnam Hospital

Upgrades provide better reliability, fewer outages

CARMEL, NY — July 6, 2023 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) continues its commitment to providing safe and reliable service with recent upgrades to its electric facilities that serve Putnam Hospital in Carmel. The upgrades will provide better reliability by adding an additional electrical source to provide power to the hospital when it needs it the most.

The hospital experienced an unplanned outage 11 times between 2019 and 2022. That’s higher than the average outage expectancy for that time frame. During the Christmas storm of 2020, the hospital’s generator failed at a time patients and critical machines were needed.

“The hospital has seen outages over the last few years mostly related to trees,” said Rob McDonough, senior manager of Regional Operations for NYSEG. “Also, the generator at the hospital does not provide emergency power for the entire facility, so when the power goes out and the generator kicks on, some parts of the hospital are still out; these upgrades will help to address that issue.”

Our patients rely on us to provide quality care, and we want to continue to do so in the way patients deserve,” said Joseph Olenik, Director of Facilities Operations at Putnam Hospital. These upgrades will allow us to take on storms and other variables, keeping us powered on to better serve our patients and guests.”

Upgrading facilities serving our customers is always a top priority for NYSEG. More than $400,000 was invested to make these important improvements. The project started in August of 2022, and the upgrades went in-service in May.
