NYSEG Crews and Contractors Committed to Restoration Efforts as Another Nor'easter Moves Across the Area

BREWSTER, NY — March 7, 2018, 10 p.m. — NYSEG, a subsidiary of AVANGRID Inc. (NYSE: AGR), continues restoration efforts as a second Nor'easter has arrived. NYSEG crews and contractors, along with assisting utilities and municipal partners from New York, Maine, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Canada worked through the day and evening in heavy snowfall to restore power to more than 176,000 customers across the state.

As the evening progressed, in the companies' Brewster division (serving Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess Counties) line and tree crews were dispatched to emergencies (including downed wires and vehicle accidents involving NYSEG equipment) caused by the winter weather conditions from this new event. More than 8,000 customers in Westchester County and nearly 3,000 in Putnam County have been affected by this new storm. Dutchess County customers' utility service has been largely unaffected by this event. Crews will work through the night to respond to all emergency conditions.

In NYSEG's Liberty division (portions of Delaware, Orange, Sullivan and Ulster Counties), weather conditions posed challenges but the crews continued restoration progress, reducing the number of Liberty division customers affected by the March 2 Nor'easter to fewer than 1,000.

As of 10 p.m., approximately 23,000 customers are without power in Delaware, Dutchess, Putnam, Sullivan, and Westchester counties.

“The safety of our customers and our crews is paramount on a day like today. Although another round of heavy snow caused new challenges, our company, contractor and mutual assistance line and tree crews, and support staff, are moving forward with our plans to get the lights back on,” said Carl A. NYSEG encourages everyone to stay away from downed power lines. Even lines that appear dead can be dangerous. NYSEG also advises customers to check local news for information on road conditions and follow any advisories or warnings. The company also

Home Generators

  • Any generator that plugs into a home's wiring should be connected via a transfer switch by a licensed electrician.
  • This ensures that when the generator is in use, house wiring is isolated from utility lines. Improper installation can damage the generator, or create hazards for utility employees working on poles, or even the general public.
  • If adding a natural gas-fired generator, consult your gas company to ensure there is adequate pressure.
  • Generators should be placed outdoors and away from doors and windows to prevent exposure to carbon monoxide.
